Animal Bioscience

Students enrolled in this major have the opportunity to obtain a strong background in the biological and physical sciences that support an understanding of the biology of animals. The program is offered jointly by the Departments of Dairy and Animal Science, Poultry Science, and Veterinary & Biomedical Sciences. During the last two years, students are expected to focus their study on one or more of the disciplines related to animal biology. Such disciplines include, but are not limited to, genetics, nutrition, immunology, physiology, and toxicology. Through elective courses, the student may gain a broad knowledge of the management of laboratory, companion, and farm animals.

Why Major in Animal Bioscience?
You should consider majoring in Animal Bioscience if you

  • want to apply the principles learned in the basic sciences and the tools of biotechnology to “real-life” situations in animal care and well-being
  • are interested in preparing for advanced study in veterinary, graduate, or other professional schools with a biomedical interest
  • want to improve the quality of food and fiber products and the efficiency of animal production by focusing on issues such as biosecurity, preharvest food safety, and the control of animal disease

Career Opportunities for Animal Bioscience Graduates
Career Opportunities for Animal Bioscience Graduates The curriculum of the Animal Bioscience program can help qualify students to apply for admission to a College of Veterinary Medicine as well as other professional schools related to the biomedical sciences. Students may also qualify for admission to graduate programs in genetics, nutrition, immunology, toxicology, and physiology. Upon completion of the professional or graduate programs, students are prepared for private practice of veterinary medicine, a career in college or university teaching, research, and extension, as well as research positions in the biomedical industry and government.

Students who decide not to pursue additional study beyond the bachelor’s degree in Animal Bioscience may pursue careers as technical support for biomedical research positions in universities, industry, or governmental research and development. Students have opportunities to serve in technical service positions with companies that provide products and services to animal agriculture. Students are strongly encouraged to gain practical experience through summer employment and internship opportunities.
